The rare back-to-back earthquake that struck Venezuela on June 24 was exceptional for the short gap between ruptures - only 39 seconds, when they would typically happen within hours or days, according to a report by Science.org. A report from downtoearth.org says only two other earthquakes had a shorter interval in the last 30 years, Pakistan in 1977 and Fukushima, Japan in 2021.

BBC News reported more than 1,700 people died and 5,000 people were injured in last week's earthquakes, with thousands more missing. The Acting Venezuelan President Delcy Rodriguez says more than 25,000 emergency workers, police officers and soldiers were deployed in a massive rescue effort.
